Dining Out: Bert ‘N Gerts BBQ & More

In my everlasting search for a quality BBQ restaurant that is actually in Charlotte, I decided to try Bert ‘N Gert’s BBQ & More (located at 9401 Statesville Rd, Suite C, 28269).

Bert 'N Gert's BBQ & More in North Charlotte

I arrived around 1:30pm on a Tuesday (June 17th) and the restaurant was very slow - only a couple of other people dining. I ordered a BBQ plate and had to wait a little longer than I should have to get it. When it came it look delicious. Unfortunately, that is there the deliciousness ended. The BBQ tasted extremely watery. Almost as if they had added water to it to keep it moist. It was not very appetizing at all. It was actually some of the worst BBQ I have ever had.

I recalled hearing a BBQ guy on the food network state one time that “sauce hides things.” Well, they need to use more sauce. After forcing about a 1/4 of the BBQ down without sauce, I tried their varying sauces which were all sufficient. None of them were “knock your socks off and give me a bottle to take home good,” but they did an ok job of covering up the watered down pork.

On a positive note, the slaw was excellent and the hush puppies were awesome. The baked beans were just average. My three year old stated that his grilled cheese was “good.”

To sum it up, I probably will not be going back just for the amazing hush puppies and slaw. I will continue my search for quality Charlotte BBQ. At least there are a few good places just outside of Charlotte with good BBQ (Courtney’s in Clover and Alfred & Charlie’s in Gastonia). I think I need to plan a trip to Lexington BBQ (in Lexington) so I can once again see what I am missing.

  1. I love Bert and Gerts Says:

You sound like an angry person. I loved the food at Bert and Gerts. The BBQ was the best I have ever had. The atmosphere was great. I have been there numerous times and have enjoyed each time. Maybe you just had a bad day because that BBQ at Bert and Gerts is so good it is slap your momma good.

  2. Chad Bordeaux Says:

I wouldn’t say I am angry - just very dissappointed. If you read my other posts, you will see that it is rare that I give a “bad” review of many restaurants.

I am also absolutely certain that I was there on a bad day. If it was a normal day, they would not be able to stay open more than a few months. Even if it was a bad day, it shows something in my eyes - a complete lack or pride in their product. Why would they serve this to a customer in the first place? They would be better served to tell the customer that they pride themselves on quality and they do not have any BBQ ready at that time. Then I would have chosen something else off the menu, and been impressed (by their pride in quality) enough to go back and try the BBQ another time. Without a doubt, the BBQ I was served had water added to it.

I do agree about the atmosphere. I liked it a lot.

Anyway, I appreciate the comment. Hopefully, they will continue to serve you the good stuff.

I have eaten and Bert n Gerts pretty much once a week since they have been open. The service is always friendly, and sometimes they may take a little bit to get the food out, but it is well worth it. As I understand they are a family business and sometimes are a little short handed. Anyway, not being much of a pork person I really enjoy their pulled chicken platter. The mac and cheese is by far the best in town, and the brisket is always tender! Give them another chance and I guarantee they will knock your socks off!!

  4. E Fritz Says:

I am sorry you had a bad experience, maybe you should try it again now. That place is great. Good food, the people are so friendly and nice, any wait is time well spent. The food is fresh and hot. I just tried it a few weeks back and cannot stop talking about it. The pulled prok was perfect. But their ribs are what you should judge a BBQ place on, and they are fall off the bone delish! They don’t need a lot of sauce cause the meat is good. Thsi is not a dry rub place so maybe that is why you do not like it?

  5. Jules Says:

I agree Bert n’ Gerts has great food. Its a family buisness and not a chain and all the food is homemade and very good. I eat there all the time. I would suggest it to anyone who just wants some good BBQ.

  6. Graham Says:

Unless they moved to another location, Bert n’ Gerts is gone. The signs are off the building facade and there are “space available” signs in the windows. It doesn’t surprise me, though. The one time I went there to eat, the food didn’t impress me. It wasn’t horrible by any stretch, just wasn’t a wow experience for me. And at the time I went, it was the dinner hour and I was the only person in the place.
